Rotorua MP Todd McClay has congratulated five Rotorua Girls’ High students for winning a nationwide Battle of Passchendaele competition and says they will represent Rotorua extremely well when they attend the 100th-anniversary commemorations in Belgium later this year.
“Alyssa Mae Pineda, Kayla Kautai, Mairaatea Mohi, Atawahi Ngatai and Keighley Jones have worked extremely hard and their win is a significant achievement. Their entry was an excellent piece of creative thinking and a very clever use of digital technology,” Mr McClay says.
The students created a website called ‘The Missed’ which detailed different aspects of the Battle of Passchendaele and included a quiz to test learning material in Maori.
“The website will make an important contribution to Year 7 to 10 students around the country and they learn about WW1,” Mr McClay says.
“It will help younger generations connect with the huge sacrifices made by brave New Zealanders during the First World War.”
